ELETICA AND THE ENOUGH PROJECT:

THE APPLICATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TO THE FOOD SECTOR.

Over the 14th – 15th September 2022, Eletica had the pleasure of taking part of the ENOUGH project meeting. The city of Padua was the venue for the meeting, which featured the 28 project partners with broad knowledge and proven experience in the food industry, cold chain management and advanced refrigeration processes. The table also included nine experts from the UK, Norway and Turkey.

The ENOUGH project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and coordinated by SINTEF Ocean (Norway) for a four-year period. The project is designed to tackle food-related emissions, which are globally responsible for approximately 20-40 % of total greenhouse gas emissions.
In the entire food chain, about 60 % of food should be refrigerated at some point and it is estimated that about 70 % of food emissions are related to perishable food. The main source of emissions is related to energy use within the food chain, but the loss of high-GWP refrigerant is another relevant source.

Therefore, the main goal of the project is to support the EU’s sustainable agriculture-to-table strategy by providing technical, financial and political tools and solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (by 2030) and achieve carbon neutrality (by 2050) in the food industry.

The plan adopted by ENOUGH is the first to provide information and identify a solid food chain baseline for 1990 and 2020 to forecast food sector emissions in 2030 and 2050. These forecasts take into account key factors such as global population trends, climate change, use of renewable energy systems, consumer behaviour and technological development.

Roadmaps will then be defined to describe the entire food supply chain from harvesting to consumption in order to establish new practices for each link in the food chain (processing, packaging, storage, transport, etc.) and limit GHG emissions.
